In the mid 1960s, while the world's eye was focused on the military activities in Southeast Asia, little notice was given to a portion of the United States Nuclear Strike Force which resided just outside the field of view of Indochina.
Hidden in concrete bunkers on the island of Okinawa were the Mace B cruise missiles.
Armed with thermonuclear warheads, these missiles comprised fully one third of the US nuclear strike force in the Pacific Theatre yet they had never been launched from an operational site.
With the Cuban Missile Crisis still fresh in memory, and the war in Vietnam escalating, the need to someday rely upon these weapons was no longer just a far-fetched war games scenario. If the Mace missiles could not be relied upon to cover their designated SIOP targets, then other, more reliable nuclear weapon systems would replace them.
With the future of the Mace at risk, a last ditch plan was developed to demonstrate the reliability of this aging weapon system. A Mace missile would be test launched from an operational site on Okinawa. This plan was code named Sunset Lily.
Sunset Lily, the Novel, is a story of political machinations and intrigue as plans for the secret launch begin uncovering hazards far beyond the control of those involved, particularly the young Second Lieutenant Launch Officer assigned to launch the missile.
Disillusioned and grappling with the mysterious death of a fellow Launch Officer, he's confronted with the realization that the ultimate test may be not of the missile, but of himself.

As a former USAF Tactical Missile Launch Specialist 1, I served on Okinawa on a Mace Missile launch crew, I found this book to be a great trip back in time that rekindled old memories of my time in the hole at Conestoga Alpha (Site 4A). The author, a former Mace Launch Officer on Okinawa, is the most qualified subject matter expert to write about this possible world changing project. His insight into the workings of the Tactical Missile Group from the Commander briefings before going to the site to the activities performed while on duty were very accurate and detailed. He brought back many memories of the Mace system that I had totally forgotten. In the high tension world of the 1960's, the planned launch of a nuclear capable missile near the China border was inviting WWIII should anything go wrong... and as in the Military, things usually do. Excellently written, easy read and will hold your attention to the end. Carlo Croce weaves in the human element along with the Military workings to give you an up front seat in this (until recently) Top-Secret USAF group, that very little was known about nor was publicised.

Sunset Lily edition by Carlo P Croce Jamie Shimizu Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Fictionalized account of an actual planned operational cruise missile launch event in the 1960s; an Interesting story with mostly-accurate depiction of operation at underground Mace B launch sites on Okinawa. Fair plot and character development with good descriptions of local cultural and military environment.
Great read for former Mace crew members in the 1960s.
COL (Ret) Gill Goering. Read on crew dogs. Good memories.
Very interesting book!
I learned so much. Geographically, militarily, administratively, technically..... I liked the colorful descriptions of people as well as things. I wish Mr Croce would write more books. Imagine him getting better and better! Can you tell I loved it?
Read Sunset Lily in 2 days. I was a mech 1 in 68 on crew 25 and an instructor in 69 on crew 30 at both site 3. Great read, memories flooded back as if I was still on the ROCK. Very Acurate description on life and the missile and systems. A must read for anyone that wore a pocket rocket or is just curious about our nuclear capability during the Cold War.
Captivating story based on a REAL Air Force project that combines accurate details about the Mace missile and the underground hard site. As a member of one of the first launch crews assigned to Okinawa, before the sites were fully constructed, it was like stepping back in time. But story line is compelling in and of itself. Easy and fast read. Demonstrates how the government's left hand doesn't always know what the right hand is doing - and with potentially devastating consequences.
After reading and enjoying Carlo Croce's first book, Launch Enable, a few years ago, I was pleased to learn he has written another about the Mace missile crews that served during the cold war.

Sunset Lily is literary soul food for anyone who ever wore Air Force blue, and is especially satisfying for those of us who fought the cold war from inside an electronics laden blockhouse or concrete grotto. It resurrects the thrill of belonging to one critical leg of the nuclear triad, and the frightening responsibility we carried...often before many of us were even old enough to vote. We were awed knowing the power that could be unleashed at the push of a button...but mostly we endured the interminable boredom of waiting day and night for a battle none of us wanted, while praying that boredom would be the only actual enemy we would ever have to fight.

Time allows us to forget the internal political hassling that permeates large organizations and author Croce does a great job of reminding the reader what the real world Air Force was like in the nineteen sixties. Overbearing, goal focused leaders, patriotism, loyalty to friend and cause, fear, disappointment, joy, humor, boredom, innocence, love. The plot is not burdened with unrealistic premises or personalities meant to titillate or terrify, but instead encourages your mind to contemplate situations that might have actually occurred, with the character roles filled by people you might know.

There is a lot of technical information about the missile system that some might have difficulty digesting, but the characters are realistic, both likeable and reviled.

I also enjoyed the Okinawan history and mini-tour woven into the story line, and as someone who has experienced the awkwardness of overseas culture shock, I grimaced as the main character innocently attempts to meld outgoing American attitudes with the dignified Japanese way.

While I highly recommend Sunset Lily to anyone who has served in uniform, others who simply enjoy military stories will also find it a good read.
